Helendale is best know today for the Silver Lakes community area. In 1969,
Justin Dart began to development the Silver Lakes project. As the part of Older's Palisades Ranch
of 3,200 acres, we now see the result of one man's dream. Today with two lakes, golf course the
are continues to grow.
In 1897, this area was know as the "Point of Rocks" station, a rest stop and
watering hole for travelers. To celebrate the birth of Mr. Wells daughter, a Senior VP of
the Santa Fe Railroad, the local people decided to rename the area to Helen. But in 1918 some
people feared their area may get confused with a town in Montana so the name was changed Helendale.
In 1926, Heledale became part of Old Route 66. The route was designed to follow
the Old National Trails like the Santa Fe. Helendale became a major link between the East Coast
through the desert to Los Angeles. In 1993, the Mohahve Historical Society placed a memorial
commemorating Old Route 66 and the community of Helendale.
Route 66 nearby in Oro Grande, the Roy Rogers Ranch (Roy's former horse ranch)
thrives today. Known as the Double R Ranch, you can visit the ranch and/or attend the annual Roy
Rogers Ranch Festival. 67-acres to Honor Roy and Dale Rogers.
